June 2008 Archives

Sorry Deutschlanders, as much as I want germany to win while you are there so you can witness the fun and excitement (partying) that goes along with winning a soccer championship, I'll be rooting for Espana...the motherland.

Spain.gifDon't take it personally though, I did live in Spain for 2 years.  So that basically makes me two twenty-fifths Spanish.

DavidVilla.jpgAlso, don't be fooled by the fact that David Villa looks somewhat like nova.  I know he's not going to care when he's blasting by the slow, calculating German defenders to score a goal.

Love you,

Competition

The Deutschland fussball team advanced to the 2008 European Cup final last night, when they took out the Turks 3-2.  Even more surprising though was that the country was able to avoid a much anticipated all out racial war (think white folk and latino tension in Ca).  After the win, us and fellow Deutschers celebrated by chanting bus, bus, bus while attempting to flip one over. The  final game will be played this Sunday v. Drunk Ruskies or Lispy Spainards.  I recon a few of you fussballers will take the time to cheer on zie DEUTSCHERS.

For Nova,

The final game of the College World Series is on tonight and in case you haven't heard its the Dogs vs. the Dogs.  Fresno State of course being the Cinderella story.

You must be torn.  Which side are you on?

I thought you flapjacks might like an update on the travels.  We are off to Croatia next week, for some fun and sun at the Garden Festival.  So get ready to dilate like the 1920's Mickey Mouse and lets MAKE PARTY!!!!!

 Costumes:

Nova has decided on Little Bo Peep.  Basically a Blue bonnet, adult daiper and a walking stick.

Curtis went with cupid.  Accessories include a wand and pink tutu.

I was lucky enough to finagle a full-sized big bird costume, neck extension included.

Here's a link to a great blog about a 1994 rap album featuring tracks from then NBA greats.  According to the blog it is available on amazon.com for $4.00  I came across in the wake of this Kobe-dissing "freestyle" from the big fella.  Here's an excerpt from the blog:

"Needless to say, this seemed like a good way to spend four dollars.

I was wrong, though. Buying this record was an outstanding way to spend four dollars. In the Pantheon of Hilariously Bad Athlete Rap, it's the missing link between "The Super Bowl Shuffle" and Kobe Bryant's abysmal "Thug Poet." Is there anything musically redeeming about it? Not at all. Is it worth listening to if you're an NBA fan? Absolutely."

Check it out here if you have time.

The Wolfpack made their first appearance this past Monday night on AG.  Since we saw two events when we went to the taping (Earthquake and The Wall), we should be on the next three or four episodes as we saw several groups of contestants take their turn through these two events.  Keep your eyes open for a bunch of drunk I.F.S. gents.  Here's a still shot I found on their website so you guys can see where we sat.  Notice Frick giving his loudest "OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW" on the end of the row holding one of the Wolfpack signs that Persons made for this occasion..

Several weeks have been spent on improving the game since the first demo.

Here are the improvements:

- Now has a 2nd level - help Schroeder find his way.

- You now bounce off enemies when you jump on them

- There is a preloader for the game, probably won't see it, but it's there.

- In Level 2, there is now water / lava, don't fall in or you die.

- You can no longer jump through the bottom of floors / walls

- The clock is now fixed so it doesn't start ticking away until the first level actually starts.

- In Level 2, there is a boss of sorts...

- And finally, there is now a scoreboard. I haven't prettied it up, but from now on scores will be saved when you hit save, so in the next week or so I will have a pretty scoreboard in place.

- Oh and I almost forgot, I don't have time to fix this, but our beloved anthem now gets played in a round when you advance to level 2, twice the anthem, twice the fun.

- For you score junkies out there the new highest score possible after the two levels is 6800 pts or somewhere around there.

Enjoy the game, see many of you in a few hours.

Play the New and Improved IFS - The Game V2.0

busch-europe.jpg Not to overshadow the upcoming weekend event, but breaking news in the business world has come to my attention, and could greatly affect us all. InBev, the european company behind such delicious beers as Stella Artois, Leffe, und Beck's has sent an offer to Anheuser Busch to acquire our dear Adolphus and family.

jack.jpgMost of you have already heard and if you haven't, well, then I'm sorry, you're just out the loop. Maritime I'll call you this afternoon. Aaaaanyway, the rumors are true...I'm finally gonna be all growns'd up, well, at least have a college degree. How sweet does Arnold's signature look on that fine piece of water-marked paper?
This Film and Media Studies degree is taking me right to the top of the entertainment industry...in San Francisco. I'm moving in a week and would love to have one more long weekend of memories, a sad bank account and an upset liver. As of now, the Franklin crew, M+T, Health, the Rabbi, Philanthropy and more friends are driving up from the southland. Possibly AP. Maritime, you dead man? A few ladies of IFS will also be in attendance.
The SB crew will be here in all it's glory with two Brazilian men and two very-well trained dogs. Wish the German posse could be here, but we'll just make life size cut-outs. Nothing is really set in stone as of now, but we're definitely gonna have a nice bbq/party on Saturday.
Here's a few options:

Any suggestions, just comment or give me a call. Friends are more than welcome, they'll be a bunch of SB locals, so the more the merrier. Any suggestions, just comment or give me a call. Should be a pretty laid back weekend and I'm excited to see those that can make it up to celebrate a perpetual college career. Perpetual is a big word. It's a college word.

The time has come!  Three months from today, we will be reeling over what an amazing trip we had just experienced.  That's right... three months from now, we will have just returned from Chicago.  Now it is time to focus our collective energies on getting there.  Philly was successful because of the enthusiasm and motivation from everyone in the group.  I hope that we can all rally around this trip together to make it just as successful.

Flights:

plane.jpg

Just as we left for Philly in the wee hours of the morning, we should do the same for this trip, Friday August 29th.  If I remember correctly, many of us left from LAX around 6am.  Search for flights that leave around this time.

There are two airports in Chicago:  Midway and O'Hare.  After talking to my dad, he said that we should fly into whichever airport you can find the cheaper flight to.  The main form of public transportation in the city is the elevated train, aka, "The EL."   As this map illustrates, the EL runs out of both airports.

http://www.transitchicago.com/maps/rail/rail.html

After scouring the interwebs, it appears that flights are going to be in the $300-$350 range.  This is a bit pricey, but we are flying home on Labor Day, so that is to be expected.  Keep searching around for the best deals and post your findings if you spot a hot deal.

We will leave Chicago Monday September 1st, preferably in the early evening so we still have a good chunk of time to spend in the city, but still get home at a decent time.

Hotel:

hotel sax.jpg
There are many hotels to choose from.  The one that caught my attention is the Hotel Sax, formerly the House of Blues Hotel.  This hotel is located on the "Magnificent Mile" and is just a little more than four miles from Wrigley.  Here's a description:

Hotel décor captures the eclectic aura of a 17th-century French salon but with a 21st-century twist. BIN 36 restaurant serves five-course tasting menus, wine pairings and a cheese bar with 50 worldwide selections. The Back Porch specializes in southern favorites such as Tennessee-style Baby Back Ribs, while even the 36-lane bowling alley serves macaroni and cheese with Wisconsin smoked cheddar and wings smothered in plum barbeque. Fine dining at Cubs announcer Harry Caray's self-titled restaurant lends itself to reputable Italian cuisine and the nationally-acclaimed steakhouse, Smith & Wollensky's, is also on site.

Right now this hotel has rooms for $250 per night.  If we have at least five monks to a room, that's $50 a night which equals $150 for the whole weekend.  We can always add another person or two per room to cut down on costs as well.

There's plenty of options for hotels in the area, some less expensive, some more expensive.  Hotel Sax is right in the middle of the price range and from the sound of it, will accommodate our needs well.

Game:

cubs logo.jpg
This year, the Cubs entered June with the best record in baseball for the first time since 1908, and we all know who won the World Series in 1908.  This is the most excitement Wrigley-ville has seen in years, and I am excited we will all be there to experience it first hand.

Tickets to the series between the Cubs and Phillies are no longer available through mlb.com.  Therefore, we must resort to StubHub.com.  We will all want to sit together, so you will want to buy your tickets for the bleachers, which is a general admission style seating arrangement.  Tickets are currently running for $70 on StubHub.  As much as I would like all of us to attend the game together, I know many of you might not be willing to pay $70 for a baseball game.  Worst case scenario, the people who want to go to the game can go to the game together while the others do as they please.

Total:

adding machine.jpg

$350 + $150 + $70 (optional) = $570 ($500 without the game)

Most of us should be receiving stimulus checks, so if you haven't already blown it, i would recommend using your check towards this trip.  Your $600 stimulus check would cover all of the aforementioned, including the Cubs ticket.  Add in your own budgets for what you think you would spend on booze and food, and you'll have your grand total.  I am not a rich man, which is why as of this past Monday, I have a new job in the evenings and I have also quit smoking.  This has taken me four hours to type because I'm so fucking jittery.  But in order to make this trip a reality, I understand that sacrifices have to be made.

When we came back from Philly, and even still looking back on it today, it's amazing how we were able to coordinate all of us to fly across the country together.  This time, we have Ministers flying from a different continent to join us in Chicago.  We are stronger.

"From north to south, from east to west, from overseas we'll come..."

Let us feast...
